Guide · Microcurrent and EMS

Microcurrent or EMS: what is the difference?

Two gentle currents, two very different feelings. What microcurrent and EMS feel like, where BEEA devices use each, and how to choose your routine safely.

BEEA SKIN · 5 min read

Microcurrent and EMS both use a small electrical current on the skin, and the difference is strength and feel: microcurrent is so gentle you may barely notice it and suits the fine zones of the face, while EMS sends stronger, rhythmic pulses that make the facial muscles contract, like a workout. Both appear in BEEA devices, sometimes in the same one.

Microcurrent: the one you barely feel

Microcurrent is a very low current. During a session you may feel a light tingle, or nothing at all. That gentleness is the point: it suits the fine zones of the face, where EMS would be too strong.

FACE GYM 3-in-1 uses microcurrent precision tips around the eye contour and the lips, 1 to 2 seconds per point, and never on the eyelids. AURA 4-in-1 counts microcurrent among its six technologies.

EMS: the one you feel as a workout

EMS, short for electrical muscle stimulation, uses stronger, rhythmic pulses, and you clearly feel them: the facial muscles contract, like a workout. The intensity comes in levels, and you always start on the lowest.

In AURA 4-in-1, EMS drives PULSE, the last step of the routine, with upward strokes. SCULPTA 4-in-1 uses EMS in every mode, along the jawline and neck, with five intensity levels. FACE GYM 3-in-1 has an EMS head, 10 to 150 Hz, for the larger zones: jawline, cheeks, cheekbones and forehead. VITA Hair Comb uses 200 Hz EMS with vibration as part of its scalp massage.

Side by side

  • How it feels: with microcurrent, a light tingle or nothing at all; with EMS, a clear contraction, like a workout.
  • Where it goes: microcurrent on the fine zones around the eye contour and lips, never on the eyelids; EMS on the larger zones of the face, and on the neck only with SCULPTA 4-in-1.
  • Intensity: microcurrent stays gentle; EMS comes in levels, and you start on the lowest.
  • What goes on first: for both, a water-based gel or serum, never oil.

AURA 4-in-1, SCULPTA 4-in-1 or FACE GYM 3-in-1?

All three use EMS. What differs is the area, the routine and how often you use them.

  • One routine for the whole face, with your serum: AURA 4-in-1. GLOW, then TONE, then PULSE, and TONE is a current so gentle you may not feel it.
  • Short, focused sessions for the jawline and neck, with controlled warmth: SCULPTA 4-in-1.
  • A workout with separate heads for the larger and the fine zones, a few times a week: FACE GYM 3-in-1.
TipNew to EMS? Stay on the lowest level for your first sessions, and go up only once the pulses feel familiar and comfortable.

SCULPTA 4-in-1€129,90

FACE GYM 3-in-1€179,90
FACE GYM 3-in-1 gives you both on one handle: the EMS head for the larger zones and microcurrent tips for the fine ones.

Good habits with any current

  • Always on a water-based gel or serum, never on dry skin. The exception is the CURE mode of AURA 4-in-1, used on clean, dry skin. Oils reduce the contact the current needs.
  • Start on the lowest level and go up only when it feels comfortable.
  • Upward strokes only. With FACE GYM, never downward and never longer than 2 seconds on one spot.
  • Keep away from the eyelids. With AURA, also keep away from the area right around the eyes, the lips and the thyroid area at the front of the neck.
  • Of these three devices, only SCULPTA 4-in-1 is used on the neck: from the collarbone up to the jaw, never over the centre of the throat.
  • Recent dental work or braces: with FACE GYM the pulses may feel unpleasant, so go carefully.
  • Mild tingling, warmth or brief redness can be normal. If something feels wrong, stop and check the user manual.
Safety. Not for anyone under 18, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with a pacemaker or implanted electronic devices, metal implants in the area you use it on, epilepsy, photosensitivity or photosensitising medication, and not on active skin conditions, broken or irritated skin, or after botox, fillers or cosmetic procedures. With a thyroid condition, leave out the neck and ask your doctor; the user manual in the box is the full reference for each device.

Questions and answers

Does EMS hurt?

No. You feel the muscles contract, like a workout. Start on the lowest level and go up when it feels comfortable; mild tingling, warmth or brief redness can be normal.

Why do I need a gel?

The current needs good contact with the skin. A water-based gel or serum lets the head glide and the pulses reach the skin evenly, while oils reduce that contact.

Can I use EMS on my neck?

Only with a device made for it. SCULPTA 4-in-1 is made for the jawline and neck, from the collarbone up to the jaw and never over the centre of the throat; FACE GYM 3-in-1 is for the face only, and with AURA 4-in-1 you keep away from the thyroid area.
